A smile is the one universal understood all throughout the world.  It symbolizes the same meaning in any language, breaking down barriers and thawing out the chilliest personalities.  Smiles are meant to be shared and can be quite infectious.  They spread like wildfire throughout a roomful of people!

However every one of us has days when we are down in the dumps and just can’t fathom the ability to muster up even the faintest of grins.  This is when we need something or someone to rely on to help us find our spectacular smiles! This object or individual should be your go to source to bring your spirit out of the slump you may have hit and help return world to happiness once more.

My source of happiness that helps to uncover my hidden smile is my cat Kasey.  He is twelve years old and I rescued him from the ASPCA at two months old.  He is definitely a unique personality! At twelve, he is still as lively as ever! He tears through the house  chasing balls, twirling in circles attempting to capture his own tail, and head butts me in the morning insistent about getting treats.  He always seems to sense when I am upset, refusing to leave my side, and instead flops down next to me or on me twisting himself upside down and gazing up at me eyes filled with unconditional love.  It’s hard to stay sad or not smile at his cute face.  He provides the extra dose of attention my soul needs at times to make me forget my worries and bring a mile wide grin to my face.  One can’t help but smile as they listen to the contented rhythmic purring emitted from a cat.  So when life seems to get me down I always snap my fingers, and Kasey appears within seconds to curl up next to me, a warm fluffy ball of pure heaven!  Kasey helps me see that life really isn’t so bad and reminds me not to take myself too seriously! Life is short so enjoy it while you can is the message cats send.  Smile, be happy!

Ever have one of those days when you are so sad, it seems to make your whole body droop?  Even doing the simplest routine things seem like a challenge.  You just feel down in the dumps and can’t seem to shake them.  Is there a way to find reprieve from your gloomy countenance? Most definitely!  The first thing you need to do is think of something you enjoy doing, it could be a  hobby such as singing, dancing, painting, drawing, or baking.  Sometimes even going for a short walk to clear your mind and get fresh air can be enough to chase those blues away!  Whatever you choose to do to escape the blues, make sure it is something that brings you great joy.  That’s the only way to successfully rid yourself of sadness propelling you back to a life of enjoyment, a life of happiness.

What do I do to chase away the blues you might wonder? I take photographs in nature.  Something about being outside,  standing under an immense sapphire sky, surrounded by nature’s beauty, just makes my problems see insignificant in the great scheme of things.  The fresh air fills my lungs rejuvenating my body and mind.  I walk through the wooded path behind my house which opens up into a vast field.  As I walk I photograph the brilliant sun poking its way through densely populated trees. I observe and capture through my camera lens birds flying in a V-formation high overhead, see a hawk soaring majestically against the blue sky, appreciate the unique way trees grow in every direction, majestically reaching so high they appear to touch the sky!  I notice reflections in the pools of water created from all the melted snow, photograph random groupings of leaves, which are remnants from fall which survived the winter, and most of all I am constantly amazed by the different cloud formations which become drenched with color due to the brilliant sun streaming through them.  If lucky I may even see a lightly hued rainbow or a rainbow shimmer which encompasses those seven magnificent colors in a compact mini form within the clouds.

Yes, photography is my way of chasing the blues away.  How can one possibly be sad when they are surrounded by so much natural beauty?  Seeing the world through my photography lens gives me a “natural high”, allowing me to move forward with my life, and face whatever comes my way with a strong, positive outlook!

First and foremost a very Happy Valentine’s Day to all! I hope you’re enjoying it with the one or one you love most! 🙂  This deer and doe certainly are! 🙂

Valentine’s day isn’t just for couples of the human race, animals express their passion for one another in their own manner.  For instance animals are protective of their loved ones (much like us humans).  They look out for each other when foraging for food (like the deer corn I have to put out twice a day due to this frigid weather!) to make sure their loved ones get the nutrition they need to survive.  Now if that’s not love I don’t know what is!  My problem is that their families are huge!  The crows around here show their love for each other by telling the first, second, third, and fourth cousins to come get food in my backyard! I’m running through my deer corn faster and faster in this weather! Someone has to help them out though with all the snow though! 🙂

Then of course there is the protective comraderie between the teeny tiny birds and what I call the “momma bird” who makes sure the birds of smaller statue get food and maintain a watchful eye over the scene.  This is a type of love formed through friendship and probably the most interesting type of relationship in the animal kingdom for me!

Above is the lookout “momma bird” as I call her!

Here are the little ones “momma bird” watches out for while they eat! 🙂

Well we all have someone to watch over and protect showing our love in various ways. Whatever your plans this Valentine’s Day, I hope you have a wonderful time!

Families can mean different things to each person.  Some people come from small families, while other people have families comprising large groups of people.  Then there are friends who have always been in your life and would give you the shirt off their backs.  They grow so close to you, you couldn’t imagine life without them.  These are your adopted family members that while not blood, are family nonetheless!
We tend to immediately picture people when we hear the word family, but animals also have their own sense of family.  Here in the picture above I was lucky to capture a family of six deer coming out of the forest to search for food together as the sun was setting.  The larger deer protected the smaller deer by keeping them in the middle of their line, just as parents protect their children.  The larger deer also kept a watchful eye for signs of danger as their young ate.  It was amazing to witness the similarities between how the mother and father deer cared for their young,  compared to how a human mother and father care for their children.  It was a truly beautiful experience!
